Subscription

This article explains how to create a subscription product variant in commercetools.

The below information pertains to configuring new subscription variants for products that use Tier discounts. The steps in this guide may not apply to old product configurations.

Setup

To set up a subscription variant of an existing product, navigate to the base produc t in commercetools, select the variants tab and on the right side click + Add variant.

Be sure to use the correct base SKU and to append it with ?q=*unit amount*

E.g.: 6782-04?q=1. Here 6782-04 is the SKU of the base product, and ?q=1 indicates a quantity of 1.

Use the base product as an example for the required fields under the Variant Attributes and be sure to specify the correct amount in the variant name.

Select the desired subscription interval from the drop down.

Do not set a value for attribute Variant is recurring, this functionality is no longer used for new products and this field will be retired in the future.

When you have configured all the required Variant attributes press the save button in the bottom right section of the screen.

You will now see the newly created variant in the Variants tab of the product, take note that the master variant is marked with the FLAG icon.

Prices

Select the newly created subscription variant and in the Prices tab select + Add embedded price.

On this page you can configure the currency and value of the price of the subscription product variant.

This page is also where the Subscription channel must be selected, to define that the product variant is a subscription product.

A subscription variant must have two embedded prices of each currency defined, one with the base unit price of the product, and a second with the base unit price which has the channel set to Subscription channel. This is necessary for correct functionality and synchronization with the Coltan backend.

The resulting behavior is that on the website the base unit price is used as a comparison with the subscription price.
